Dad always used to quote lines of poetry for us but never to completion. Here are some that I remember:I eat my peas with honey I’ve done it all my life It makes the peas taste funny But it keeps them on the knife. – Anonymous
And another from The Walrus and the Carpenter:“The time has come,” the Walrus said, “To speak of many things:” – Lewis Carol
And a nonsense rhyme:It was midnight on the ocean blue, Not a street car was in sight, The sun was shining brightly, Though it rained all day the night. – Asa Martin
It went on about lard being rendered by the choir while the organ peeled potatoes and the vicar losing his hair as someone set the church on fire:While the organ peeled potatoes
Lard was rendered by the choir
The sexton rang a dish-rag
Someone set the church on fire
Holy smokes the preacher shouted
In the rain he lost his hair
Now his head resembles heaven
Cause there sin’t no partin’ there.
And now I find myself reciting the same fragment to Daniel as he goes to sleep. Methinks I better learn the rest of them and maybe the Rime of the Ancient Mariner too.
